Great quick read to brush up on accounting, January 10, 2012

This review is from: Accounting Quick & Simple (Kindle Edition)

I have taken accounting courses in college and am applying for an accounting job within a new company. I needed to be brushed up on accounting basics.

Super easy read, quick, and helped me remember everything. I agree on a few typos, but still overall great and accurate intro into accounting.

It needs to be edited. It's clear that the person who wrote this does not speak English as a first language.

That being said, once you get past the occasional awkward phrase, it's a good crash course.

Ultimately, I'd wait for the 2nd Edition.

Terrible accounting text, February 25, 2007

The textbook is just poorly organized and doesn't begin to prepare you to solve the problems that are given at the end of each chapter. While it defines terms well it also leaves out explanations for most practical applications that are tested for in the problems. There is no way to check your actual work, since even the homework manager only provides solutions and not a detailed methodology as to how the answers were arrived at. It is amazing that this has survived to 7 editions without someone organizing the chapters and the material in some more organized fashion. Unrelated concepts are thrown in at the end of chapters with little explanation. If you want to learn accounting terminology this book is okay. If you want to learn how journal entries are actually recorded line by line look somewhere else. The explanation of debits and credits is perfunctory. This is not written as an entry level accounting text for non accountants.

Avoid at all costs!!!!, February 12, 2004

Rhino king "DC" (Cincinnati, Ohio United States) - See all my reviews

I am having to use this book for an Accounting Grad class and it is perhaps one of the worst txt books I have ever laid my eyes on! Wordy doesn't begin to describe how bad this book is, did this go through an editor or straight to press? It just goes on and on and on throwing in examples that come later in the chapter, the examples are poor never follwing a simple path, and the questions at the end of each section are as bad as the book. This book reminds me of someone who decides to teach you something off of the top of their head, they didn't bother to make any notes or set a goal for how they wanted to approach the subject. Avoid at all costs!!!

This book is very confusing, February 2, 2003

By A Customer

As a first timer to accounting I htought the book should have better explained the basics instead of rushing into so much complicated material. I feel in order to be able to understand this book I should have taken a basic accounting class first.

Well presented, but you need the study guide., October 24, 1999

This book, actually two sold as one, has a ton of exercises, with NO useful answers--as though a ploy to force you to buy the study guide. On retrospect: buy the study guide if you hope to actually DO any exercises as part of your learning. (Note to autors: break this into the TWO books you know it is, and add the answers to the odd-numbered questions, eh?)

Poor Textbook, May 24, 2012

By
Kyle (Provo, UT) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Accounting: Concepts and Applications (with Annual Report) (Hardcover)

The information in this book is valuable and correct, and the authors come across as very personable. However, the way the information is portrayed to the reader is sub-par. The organization of the book is poor, and the book contains many grammatical errors and typos.

In addition, as you can see in other reviews, there is not a way to check the answers in the back of the book! As you do the practice problems to see if you actually understand a concept, don't you agree that it would be nice to see if you are doing the problem correctly? Yeah, me too. Instead, you find out if you know how to do the problems when you take a quiz or an exam.

This book caused a lot of confusion because the lack of answers in the back of the book and the typos in questions (do the authors think we are children who will just copy all the answers or what?); as a result, I cannot give this book more than one star.

I understand if you must use this book for a course, but if you are debating buying this book as a supplementary text I highly recommend avoiding it.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This was a big mistake on my part.
Reasons:
1. Cant sell it back
2. Doesn't have page numbers so if you're teacher tells you your hw is to read pgs 303-330 you have no idea where that is.
3. Doesn't have chapters 15 or 16 of the book.
Hardback edition should be nice, get that instead
