EXACTLY like the hardcover version, only more convenient!, September 27, 2012
The hardcover of this textbook for Financial Accounting here at my local college was 0 in the bookstore, so I was super excited to find this loose-leaf version here on Amazon at a fraction of the cost. It arrives as just a big stack of paper with holes punched for putting into a 3-ring binder. The pages are otherwise exactly the same - the ONLY difference is that they are unbound. The other great thing about this version is that you ca put your homework at the end of each chapter, making for easier studying for the tests. I highly recommend this version!
As for the book itself, it is highly readable and easy to understand. If you want to teach yourself Financial Accounting without taking the class, this is the right book to do it. It's written in everyday language with technical terms introduced in the format of a small business entrepreneur asking questions about how to start his business from a financial adviser, and her answers to his questions. There are also great explanations for every detail of all of the financial forms discussed.
Basically, of the three different textbooks I've seen for this college class, THIS ONE is by far the most student-centered and student-friendly. Professors - use this to make it easier on your students, and in this version to avoid breaking the bank for them!

I purchased this text for use in my Introduction to Accounting class the second time I took it. The prior semester I had registered for the same class and used a prior edition. This one was much easier to read. I learned more and did better in the class in part because of how user friendly it was. I am saying this despite the fact I was unhappy at being unable to reuse the prior version of the textbook. The change in layout made more sense. With all due respect to accountants, I am giving this product four stars because it improved on the two to three star experience with the prior text. I still found that the text book did not sufficiently cover all of the necessary information. I was using this book and the internet to understand concepts. I also was required to do problems online which I believe was an additional tool offered by the publisher. I liked this text better and the exercise interface on the prior version. So, the prior version online exercises with this textbook would have been five stars in my book. Ultimately, if you are reading this review, you are probably in no position to choose your textbook anyway. Do the exercises on the website. If your professor does not offer this option, ask for it. You will better understand the concepts in the textbook. If you professor says "no", find out if you can "opt in". It is better worth your time and money than the textbook alone.

I used this text in a financial accounting course, it was the only accounting course I took in college so this is from the perspective of a non-accounting student.
I love the real world examples of company's financial data and reports. I also like the fact the text does a good job of highlighting the formulas and important information you'll need to know.
The only negative thing is there were a few mistakes in the on-line homework problems, which I pointed out to the instructor.

A must-read for anyone involved in not for profits, August 6, 2010
This review is from: The Simplified Guide to Not-for-Profit Accounting, Formation and Reporting (Paperback)
Laurence Scot has done an excellent job writing a concise yet comprehensive guide to the organizational, finance, and accounting framework for not-for-profits. The book is very well-written and flows logically from topic to topic. The reader will be much better served by buying this book than one of the "For Dummies...." guides on similar topics. Buy this book!!!!
The Simplified Guide to Not-For-Profit Accounting, Formation, & Reporting takes the reader on a journey from getting that initial "aha" idea that germinates many not for profits, to the registration process with the state(s) and IRS, how the accounting operations should function, what items in NFP financial statements mean and how they should be presented, what to consider when buying NFP accounting software, and roles of the board, committees and management.
It is so clearly written that even the least financially-savvy board member can quickly read it, understand it, and apply what they learned to their work on the board.
I am the CFO of a not-for-profit and I have to say that every not-for-profit would benefit from distributing copies of this book to their senior staff and board members.

For those of you with a finance and accounting background who may be thinking about transitioning your skills to a not-for-profit organization after having spent most of your career working in a for profit company like me then this book is a must read.
The author Laurence Scot provides excellent examples and illustrations of how not-for-profit organizations record their financial transactions and prepare their financial statements. He has also included a chapter on regulatory reporting covering the new Form 990.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a comprehensive overview of not-for-profit accounting and reporting.

This review is from: The Simplified Guide to Not-for-Profit Accounting, Formation and Reporting (Paperback)
This book provides a solid overview of not-for-profit accounting. It starts with the basics - what is a NFP and basic double entry accounting (credits and debits) - before moving onto real issues - accounting for assets and liabilities, contributions, investments, expenses, budgeting and providing a brief overview of the new 990 and preparing for external audits. The author amply illustrates each point with journal entries, financial statements & charts. There is a sample NFP chart of accounts in the appendix.
I would have liked to see the book go into more detail about the 990, preparing for audits and internal controls for NFP; however, those are topics for other books.
That said, this book does what it aims to do; it gives the reader a "simplified" overview of NFP accounting, and its a book I am going to recommend to my NFP clients.

Financial Accounting: An Introduction to Concepts, Methods and Uses

Although extremely rigorous in definitions and concepts, definitely not the type of text book I would recommend for a MBA introductory accounting class. Steer clear. The structure is confusing, and the way it has been presented made it even more confusing. Only positive note are the problems at the end of each chapter, which are challenging enough and offer a good preparation even for the toughest tests. Previously, I had another intro accounting class in which Horngren/Harrison Financial Accounting Managerial was used. I have found this latter text book much clearer, to the point, concise.

This review is from: Financial Accounting: An Introduction to Concepts, Methods and Uses (Hardcover)
This book is horrible. It does show you how to work the problems. It's full of high level explanation and no deep explanation of the concepts or the problems. It's poorly organized and super expensive. It does not contain answers to the odd problems in the back of the book like most (math type of books) text books tend to have. There is no study guide for this edition; the publisher's web site claims there exist, I have not found it there or anywhere else. However, a study guide does exist for the previous edition. There is a solutions manual that one has to purchase a key to access the anwers to the odd problems online. The solutions manual falls really too, because it just gives the answers and offers no explanation of the problems. I really need some kind of study guide that explains the problems in detail so that I can check myself. The book has a companion site that is a little helpful, it has one online quizzes, chapter summary and spreadsheets for each chapter.

This review is from: Financial Accounting: An Introduction to Concepts, Methods and Uses (Hardcover)
Forced to use this text as a part of an MBA program, I found myself pouring over every paragraph without advancing my knowledge. Additionally, the book is riddled with errors, making it even harder to establish any trust between reader and author. If you too are forced to use this text, I hope you are better at finding external resources than was I. If you are using the text for self-study and have little or no background in accounting, I strongly urge to you to look elsewhere.
